Busy

Been really busy, I haven't posted in a while. Sorry.

24 hour comic day was a success (in that I finished, and not in that I was happy with the work, but alas such is 24 hour.)

But I'll post more soon, doodles and fun things and the like, I just wanted to check in. In the meantime, I've been listening to a lot of Rush lately, and you should too.

Also, I now have a Flash t-shirt, and I'm pretty happy about that.

Warming up.

So as you could probably tell, I've been on a sketching kick lately, and I've been loving it. Nothing quite feels so good as drawing a tonne. As per usual, I thrive when its just loose sketchbook work, not really taking things to what a lot of people would consider a state of 'finished'. I like it though, I feel good, feel loose, feel like i can stretch my legs artistically. And it also feels like I'm really working towards my goal of being a professional (ie:paid, preferably on a regular basis) comic book artist. I think i'm almost ready for getting into a more storytelling mode. Stories, etc. I think I've got a really cool concept for 24 hour comic day next month, which is good, cause if you go in unprepared for that, you could actually die.

So here's a sketch of me sketching. It's a very zen-like thing. I know.

P.S. If you're reading this and you're into comics, please go buy Thor: The Mighty Avenger. It's an awesome, easy read, but its so much fun, the art is sublime yet accessible, and it's out-of-continuity, which means that you really don't need to know anything about the character or anything thats happened to him in the past. It's really good.

A return to the drafting board!

I've been doing a lot of sketching lately, feeling inspired, confident and having some fun with it. Lot of the inspiration comes from the upcoming 24 hour comic day, which is coming up next month, and this year, I'm planning on kicking a tonne of ass.

Anyhoo, here's a few sketches I've been working on. Lots of ink stuff; I got really bogged down by pencil work, so this felt refreshing.

In the meantime, I've been listening to the new album by Texas' The Sword. It's seriously, really rad. Anyway, I will post more and talk more soon.

Peace

Today's whiskey anthem

Love this song. It's the new soundtrack to my dreams of owning my '55 Chevy.

More Posters, and a few thoughts on Loeb: The mother of all shitty writers.

I have got to update this thing more often. Anyway, works been a little dry on the poster front, so here's a few older favorites. On the plus side, i have been doing more drawing lately (all superhero nerdy stuff) and I'm starting to get to know my Wacom tablet. That, I should have done a long, long time ago. Other than that, with the design work not paying the bills (not that it ever did) and welfare cutting my monthly allowance (from just over $500 a month to a $1. Literally, a dollar!) since I moved in with my girlfriend, my nerd habits are no longer being adequately funded, and so: I will be job hunting in the near future. Yessir, with resume in hand, I will go out in the world once again full of piss and vinegar, with no doubt that I will succeed! Also, I think I'm close to coming up with a solid concept for a comic, and then get this ball-a-rollin'!

Other news and fun stuff: managed to see the Thor footage from comic-con before Marvel's legal wolves had it taken down, and the verdict is: Awesome!! As a giant Thor geek, I am REALLY loving what I've been seeing! Also, check out the new Ryan Bingham CD, its amazing. And Secret Avengers may be my new favorite comic ever.

Besides that, a little while ago, Marvel writer Jeph (I'm a sack of shit) Loeb was promoted to VP of TV and Animation at Marvel, and I couldn't be happier for the guy! Well, that is, see, I'm hoping his new found corporate responsibilities will keep him from writing as many titles on a monthly basis, and in case you didn't know; I think Loeb is a sack of shit. The only time I like Loebs work is when he works with Tim Sale, and then his wooden "I can't write dialog for shit" scripts find a nice, campy home. Beyond that, he's ruined everything he's ever even looked at. Ultimates was one my favorite all-time titles, and he just shat on it and every good thing that it was. And don't even get me started on his whole Hulk/Red Hulk thing that he's been doing, because it's awful. just. Awful.

New gig posters

Here's a couple of poster work I've done lately. I'll post some of my older favorites later. I mostly do work for smaller shows here in Edmonton. I really enjoy the work, I like doing posters. I feel like I still got a long way to go before I can be the kind of poster artist I'd like to be,for now these are fun.

To boldly go where...yaddayaddayadda

So I have finally caught up to the rest of the world, and have now created a full-on ass-kicking blog the likes of which would make even the might NPH cry. I really don't have much to post right now, as my computer (chock-full of kick-assery) is in the shop, and I'm setting this up on my girlfriends mac. So be prepared for much awesomeness in the near-future as I throw myself (along with art, fun stuff, and opinions and such) onto the wild wild world of THE INTERNETS (without the safety net that is facebook). Anyhoo, as I post things and ongoing in my life, I hope you enjoy my rants ravings and like. In the meantime, here's some stuff I'm liking right now:

-Cowboy hats
-Scalped by Jason Aaron and Pia Guerra, from Vertigo comics
-The Crazy Heart Soundtrack
-The artwork of Olivier Coipel (Thor, Siege)
-The theme song to True Blood

Until next time,
Stay Gold
